How to calculate a notice period

    1. Choose what you want to know

Pick When notice ends to count forward from the day notice is given, or Latest day to give notice to count back from a target date.

    2. Enter the period

Type the length and choose calendar days, working days, weeks or months. Tick the options your contract uses.

    3. Read the dates

You see the last day of the period with its weekday, the dates it runs between and how many calendar and working days it covers.

    When does notice start?

In most places a notice period starts the day after notice is given, so one month's notice given on 2 November ends on 2 December. If your contract counts the day notice is given, untick Notice starts the next day.

Ending at the end of a month

Some contracts and laws let notice end only at the end of a month. With that option, a period that would end on 2 December runs until 31 December instead.

    Frequently asked questions

    How is a month counted?

A month runs to the day before the same date in the next month, counted from the first day of notice. If that date doesn't exist, for example 31 February, the last day of the shorter month is used.

    Are public holidays counted?

Calendar days and months include weekends and public holidays. Working days skip Saturdays and Sundays but not public holidays; for those, use the Business Days Calculator.

Which notice period applies to me?

Your contract, a collective agreement or the law sets it, and it often depends on how long you have worked there. This tool counts dates; it doesn't know the rules.
