    How to calculate annual leave

    1. Enter the full-year entitlement

Type the days a full-time employee gets for a whole leave year, and the day your leave year starts.

    2. Add your dates and working week

Enter your start or end date if you join or leave during the year, and the days you work per week compared with full time.

    3. See what you're owed

The result shows the leave you earn, rounded the way you choose, and what's left after the days you've taken. Add hours per day to see it in hours.

How pro rata leave is worked out

Entitlement × days employed in the leave year / days in the leave year × your days per week / full-time days per week. Joining on 1 July with 25 days a year gives 25 × 184 / 365 = 12.6 days.

    Rounding

Many employers round up to the next half or whole day; others keep the exact figure. Pick the rule your employer uses; the unrounded figure is shown too.

    Frequently asked questions

What counts as the leave year?

The 12 months your leave is counted over, often the calendar year or a company holiday year starting in April, for example. Enter its first day; the last day is shown below the field.

    Does it include public holidays?

Only if your entitlement does. Enter the entitlement the way your contract states it, with or without public holidays.

Some employers count whole months. Is that supported?

The calculation uses calendar days, which is the more exact method. Counting whole months can give a slightly different number; your contract or local rules decide which applies.
