Base64 Encode / Decode

Turn text or a file into Base64, or decode a Base64 string back into readable text. Works with UTF-8, emoji and URL-safe Base64.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

How to encode or decode Base64

  1. Choose a mode

Pick Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into text.

  2. Paste or open a file

Type or paste into the input. To encode a whole file, such as an image or a PDF, use Open file.

  3. Copy the result

The output updates as you type. Copy it, or download decoded data as a file.

What is Base64 used for?

Base64 writes binary data using only letters, digits, + and /. That makes it safe to embed images in HTML or CSS, send attachments by email, or put binary values into JSON and configuration files.

URL-safe Base64

Standard Base64 uses + and /, which have special meanings in web addresses. The URL-safe variant (Base64URL), used in JWTs, replaces them with - and _ and usually drops the = padding.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. Base64 only changes how data is written, and anyone can decode it. Don't use it to hide passwords or personal data.

Why is the Base64 text longer than the original?

Base64 uses 4 characters for every 3 bytes, so the result is about a third larger than the original.

Are special characters and emoji supported?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so accented letters, Arabic and Devanagari script, and emoji survive the round trip.

Is there a size limit for files?

Files are processed in your browser and never uploaded, so the limit is your device's memory. Files of a few megabytes work comfortably.
