What comes through, and what doesn't
The converter reads the text on each page and rebuilds it as Word paragraphs. Larger text becomes headings, lines that start with a bullet become a list, text set out in columns becomes a simple table, and bold and italic stay. Pictures are kept as images. Exact positions, fonts, colours, text boxes, form fields and drawn charts are not, so a heavily designed page comes out as plain, editable text.
Scanned and protected PDFs
A scan is a picture of a page, so there is no text to take over until OCR recognizes it. Recognition takes longer and works best on sharp, straight scans. If a PDF asks for a password to open, enter it when asked; it is only used on this device.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your device. Only the OCR option downloads something: the Tesseract program and language data from jsDelivr, the first time you use it.
Will the layout look the same?
Not exactly. You get the text as editable paragraphs with headings, lists, simple tables and pictures, on the same page size. Columns, text boxes, exact fonts, colours and drawn shapes are not rebuilt, so designed pages need some tidying in Word.
Can I convert a scanned PDF?
Yes. Tick OCR, and the text of pages without a text layer is recognized in the language of this page and English. Without OCR, scanned pages are added as pictures.
