How to make an org chart

  1. List your people

Write one person per line as Name – Title. Indent people with spaces or tabs to place them under their manager.

  2. Choose the direction

Vertical suits small teams; horizontal fits deep or wide organisations better on a page.

  3. Download it

Download PNG for slides and documents, or SVG for print and further editing.

Indented text is quick to edit

Moving a person to another manager only means changing the indentation, and you can keep the list in any text file or paste it from an outline. Separate the name and the title with a dash that has a space on each side, or with a vertical bar.

A tidy layout

Teams are packed as closely as their shapes allow, each manager sits centred above their team, and separate trees, such as a board and a company, are placed side by side.

Frequently asked questions

How big can the chart be?

There's no fixed limit, but charts with more than about 60 people are hard to read on one page. Split large organisations into one chart per department.

Can a person have two managers?

No. Each line belongs to the nearest less indented line above it, so everyone has one manager. Mention dotted-line reporting in the title instead.

Is my list uploaded?

No. The chart is drawn in your browser.
