RESULT

The comparison appears here once both documents are open.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

How to compare two Word documents

  1. Open both versions

Drop the original .docx on the left and the changed one on the right.

  2. Review the changes

Show the whole text or only the changed paragraphs, and ignore case or punctuation if they don't matter.

  3. Download the comparison

Get a .docx in which every change is a tracked change you can accept or reject in Word.

Text, not formatting

The comparison looks at the words of headings, paragraphs, list items and table rows. Changes to fonts, styles or layout aren't detected, and the comparison document contains plain headings and paragraphs rather than the original layout.

When a file comes back without tracked changes

Colleagues and clients often edit a document without turning on Track Changes. Comparing the version you sent with the one you got back shows every edit, so nothing slips through.

Frequently asked questions

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Both files are read and compared in your browser.

Can I compare a Word file with a PDF?

Not directly. Convert the PDF to Word first, then compare the two .docx files; expect some differences that come from the conversion.

How is this different from Word's own Compare?

Word's Compare also checks formatting and keeps the layout. This tool works in any browser without Word and is quick for checking the text.
