How to calculate reading time
Paste the text
Paste a blog post, a newsletter, a presentation script or open a text file.
Pick a speed
Choose slow, average or fast, or enter your own words per minute for reading and speaking.
Read the times
The totals and the paragraph table update as you edit, so you can trim a talk to its time slot.
How the times are calculated
Words are counted with your browser's language-aware text segmentation, then divided by the speed. Average assumes 230 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for speaking, typical for adults reading non-fiction and for a calm presentation.
Planning a talk or a video
The speaking time per paragraph shows which parts run long. As a rule of thumb, a 10-minute talk at an average pace is about 1,300 words; leave time for pauses, slides and questions.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my reading speed different?
Speed depends on the reader, the language and the text. Technical writing is read more slowly than a novel. Use Custom to enter a speed that fits your audience.
How are paragraphs split?
A blank line starts a new paragraph. In text without blank lines, each line counts as a paragraph.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser.
