How to count words and characters

  1. Paste your text

Type or paste the text of an essay, a post, an ad or a form field.

  2. Read the counts

Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines update as you type.

  3. Edit to fit the limit

Shorten or extend the text right in the box until it meets the limit you're working to.

Character limits that matter

Search results show around 155 characters of a meta description, posts and text messages have hard limits, and many forms cut text off at a set length. Counting as you write saves a round of edits.

How words are counted

Words are counted with your browser's language-aware text segmentation, so hyphenated words, numbers and scripts other than Latin are handled sensibly. Reading time assumes about 230 words per minute, speaking time about 130.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces counted as characters?

Both counts are shown: characters including spaces, and characters without spaces and line breaks.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser; nothing is stored or uploaded.

Why does my word processor show a different number?

Tools treat hyphens, numbers, web addresses and symbols differently. In a long text the difference is usually a few words.
