How it works
A portrait matting model, MODNet, estimates for every pixel how likely it is to belong to the person in the photo. Pixels in the background become transparent, with soft edges around hair.
Getting a clean cut-out
Good lighting and a subject that stands out from the background give the best results. Busy backgrounds, transparent objects and several overlapping people are harder.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The model runs in your browser. The model files are downloaded from Hugging Face and the program from jsDelivr the first time; your photo is never sent.
Why is the result not perfect?
The model was trained on portraits, so it is reliable with people and less so with objects and products, which may lose parts. Fine details, things held in the hands and backgrounds similar to the subject are also hard.
What size is the result?
The same size as your photo, saved as PNG so the transparency is kept.
