How to compress an image

  1. Add your images

Drop one or more images onto the input or use Open images.

  2. Choose quality and format

Around 70–80 quality looks the same to most people at a fraction of the size. WebP usually gives the smallest files.

  3. Download

Each result shows its new size and the saving. Download images one by one or all at once as a ZIP.

Why compressing helps

Phone photos are often several megabytes, more than many forms and email systems accept. Smaller images also make web pages load faster, which visitors and search engines notice.

Lossy and lossless

JPEG and WebP save space by leaving out detail the eye barely sees; the quality setting controls how much. PNG is lossless, so it can't be compressed much here: convert it to WebP or JPEG for big savings.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Images are decoded and compressed in your browser and never leave your device.

Is the photo metadata kept?

No. Compressed images are saved without EXIF data such as the camera model or GPS location, which also saves a little space.

Why did a file get bigger?

An image that was already well compressed can grow when saved again. With Keep the original when it's already smaller turned on, the original file is kept instead.
