How to make a barcode

  1. Pick the type

Use EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail products, EAN-8 for small packs, Code 128 for shipping and internal labels, and Code 39 for older systems that need it.

  2. Enter the data

Type the number or text. For EAN and UPC you can leave out the last digit; the check digit is calculated.

  3. Size and download

Set the bar width, height and colours, choose whether to show the text, and download PNG or SVG.

Product barcodes need registered numbers

EAN and UPC numbers on products sold in shops are issued by GS1. This tool draws the barcode for any number, but retailers only accept numbers that are licensed to your company.

Printing barcodes that scan

Keep the white margin on both sides, print dark bars on a light background and don't stretch the image unevenly. SVG stays sharp at any size; for PNG, use a bar width of at least 2 pixels.

Frequently asked questions

What does the check digit do?

The last digit of an EAN or UPC number is calculated from the others, so a scanner can tell when a digit was misread. If you type all the digits, the tool tells you when the check digit is wrong and what it should be.

Which characters does Code 128 support?

All 128 ASCII characters: letters, digits, punctuation and control characters. The tool switches between Code 128's character sets automatically to keep the barcode as short as possible, and packs pairs of digits together.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Barcodes are drawn in your browser.
