How to calculate VAT
Enter the amount
Type the price or invoice total you're starting from.
Enter the rate
Type the VAT rate as a percentage. Rates vary by country and by product.
Choose the direction
Pick Net if the amount doesn't include VAT yet, or Gross if it already does. The results update as you type.
Net, VAT and gross
The net amount is the price before tax, the VAT is the tax on top, and the gross amount is what the buyer pays. Adding VAT multiplies the net amount by 1 plus the rate; removing it divides the gross amount by the same factor.
A common mistake
To remove 20% VAT you divide by 1.2; you don't subtract 20% of the gross amount. On a gross amount of 120, the VAT is 20, not 24.
Frequently asked questions
Which VAT rate should I use?
It depends on the country and the product. Many countries have a standard rate plus reduced rates for items such as food or books. Check the current list from your tax authority.
How are the results rounded?
Results are shown to two decimal places. Invoices may round each line item separately, so totals can differ by a cent.
Does it work for GST and sales tax?
Yes. GST and other VAT-style taxes work the same way, and sales tax added at the till can be calculated as Net.
