How to calculate discounts and margins

  1. Pick a calculation

Choose Discount, Margin from price or Price from margin.

  2. Enter the amounts

Type the price and the discount, or the cost and the selling price, or the cost and the margin you want.

  3. Read the result

The results update as you type. Use Copy next to any value.

Margin and markup are not the same

Both compare profit with a price, but margin divides by the selling price and markup by the cost. Buying at 60 and selling at 100 is a 40% margin and a 66.67% markup. Mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes.

Two discounts don't add up

25% off and then another 10% off is 32.5% off in total, not 35%, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price. Enter a second discount to see it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the price for a target margin?

Divide the cost by 1 minus the margin. For a 40% margin on a cost of 60: 60 / (1 − 0.4) = 100.

Should the amounts include VAT?

For margins, use prices without VAT, because the tax isn't your income. To add or remove VAT, use the VAT Calculator.

Why can't the margin be 100%?

A 100% margin would mean the cost is zero, and a margin above 100% is impossible. Markup has no upper limit.
