How to calculate loan payments

  1. Enter the loan

Type the amount you borrow, the yearly interest rate and the term in years or months.

  2. Add extra payments

Optional: enter an amount you'd pay on top each month to see how much sooner the loan is paid off and how much interest you save.

  3. Check the schedule

The table shows payment, interest, repayment and balance by year or by month. Download it as CSV for a spreadsheet.

How the payment is calculated

Fixed-rate loans with equal monthly payments use the annuity formula: payment = amount × r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where r is the yearly rate / 12 and n the number of months. Early payments are mostly interest; later ones mostly repay the loan.

What the calculator leaves out

Fees, insurance, variable rates and payment breaks aren't included. Lenders may also round each payment or quote an APR that includes fees, so their figures can differ slightly.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter the nominal rate or the APR?

Enter the nominal yearly rate the loan is charged at. The APR also includes fees, so using it gives a slightly higher payment than the lender's.

How do extra payments work here?

The extra amount is added to every monthly payment and goes straight to repaying the loan. The regular payment stays the same, so the loan ends sooner.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation and the CSV file are made in your browser.
