How to create a favicon

  1. Choose letters or an image

Type one to three letters or an emoji, or open your logo.

  2. Style it

Pick the shape and colours, or the background and padding for an image.

  3. Download and add it

Download the ZIP, upload the files to your site's root folder and paste the HTML into the page head.

What's in the package

favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions for browsers, PNG icons in 16 and 32 pixels, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon for iPhone and iPad home screens, 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android, and a site.webmanifest that lists them.

Designing for 16 pixels

A favicon is tiny in a browser tab. One or two bold letters or a simple symbol stays recognisable; detailed logos turn to mush. Check the 16 pixel preview before you download.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put the files?

In the root folder of your website, so that /favicon.ico and the other paths in the HTML exist. Then add the HTML lines inside <head>.

Why does my old favicon still show?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Reload with the cache cleared or open the site in a private window to check.

Is my logo uploaded?

No. All icons are drawn in your browser.
