How to convert CSV to JSON

  1. Paste or open the CSV

Paste rows copied from a spreadsheet or open a .csv file exported from Excel, Google Sheets or a database.

  2. Check the options

Choose whether the first row holds column names and whether you want objects or plain arrays.

  3. Copy or download

Copy the JSON or download it as a .json file for your code, API or import.

From spreadsheet to API

CSV is how most spreadsheets and databases export data, while APIs, configuration files and JavaScript code expect JSON. Converting turns each row into an object whose keys are the column names.

Commas, semicolons and quotes

Excel in many European languages saves CSV with semicolons, and fields that contain the delimiter or line breaks are wrapped in quotes. The converter reads both, following RFC 4180.

Frequently asked questions

Are numbers kept as numbers?

Turn on Detect numbers and true/false to turn values such as 42 and true into JSON numbers and booleans. Values with leading zeros, such as postcodes, stay text.

What if my file has no header row?

Turn off First row is a header. The columns are then named Column 1, Column 2 and so on, or choose Array of arrays.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser and never leaves your device.
