Hash Generator
Get the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text or file at once, to compare checksums or check that a download is intact.
INPUT
OUTPUT
The result appears here as you type.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.
How to generate a hash
Enter text or open a file
Type or paste text, or use Open file to hash a download, an archive or a document.
Read the hashes
All five hashes are calculated at once and shown in hexadecimal.
Compare or copy
Compare a value with the checksum the publisher lists, or copy the one you need.
What is a hash?
A hash function turns data of any size into a short, fixed-length fingerprint. Change a single character and the fingerprint changes completely, which makes hashes useful for spotting corrupted or altered files.
Which algorithm should I use?
Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 for anything security-related. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes but still common for quick checksums and older systems.
Frequently asked questions
Can a hash be reversed to get the original text?
No, hashing is one-way. Short or common inputs can still be guessed, which is why passwords need a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2 rather than a plain hash.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Files are read and hashed in your browser and never leave your device.
Why doesn't my hash match?
Check that the text is identical, including spaces, line breaks and letter case. Text is hashed as UTF-8; other tools may use a different encoding.
