URL Encode / Decode

Make text safe for web addresses and query strings, or turn percent-encoded sequences such as %20 and %C3%BC back into readable text.

Mode

INPUT

OUTPUT

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

How to encode or decode a URL

  1. Choose a mode

Pick Encode to make text safe for a URL, or Decode to make an encoded address readable.

  2. Paste your text

Paste a query value, a full address or a link copied from your browser's address bar.

  3. Copy the result

The output updates as you type. Use it as input to switch direction and check the round trip.

When do you need URL encoding?

Spaces, accented letters and characters such as &, ? and # have special meanings in web addresses. Encoding writes them as % followed by two hexadecimal digits, so the address arrives intact in tracking links, API calls and form data.

Encoding a value or a whole URL

When you encode a single query value, characters such as / ? & = are encoded too. Choose Keep URL structure to encode a complete address while leaving its separators in place.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a space become %20, and sometimes +?

In URL paths a space is written as %20. HTML forms encode spaces in query strings as +. When decoding form data, turn on Treat + as a space.

What does “invalid percent-encoded sequence” mean?

The text contains a % that isn't followed by two hexadecimal digits, or bytes that don't form valid UTF-8. Look for a stray % sign.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Encoding and decoding happen in your browser.
